Bowling Green Amateur World Championships
The Bowling Green Amateur Disc Golf Championships is one of the largest disc golf spectacles in North America. People come from far and wide to wade in the river of plastic and chains, and not just to play in the event. There are many that come to volunteer, sell their merchandise, or just spectate the hundreds of competitors. This year, over nine hundred golfers will try to win their respective divisions, and I will throw my hat in as one of the many.
The event actually starts when the sponsors, vendors, and volunteers, including some major touring professionals, show up early in the week. There are clinics, doubles rounds, throw-off competitions, and much more that, sadly, I will be missing. A man has to work...
This will be my first year attending, so I can't speak to what I'm about to experience, but everyone that's been has built this up to be a weekend Mecca of the like-minded. I will be riding with my friend Josh, and our schedule is pretty full: leave Thursday after work and make the four hour journey, setting up camp at the KOA (which conveniently is right next to Basil Griffin Park, home to our first round.) We will sign in on Friday morning and get our player's packs, which consist of nine discs and plenty of other cool items I can't even remember.
Our first round will start around lunchtime, and then we will eat and go to the renowned Flymart; a flea market of sorts for disc golf. I plan on going live on Facebook for that venture, as I'm sure my peers back home want to see what the fuss is about. There are supposedly a plethora of vendors there, and the big name vendors release new disc molds and other gear exclusively at the event. I personally can't wait to see what the Prodigy booth has in store for us this year!
Saturday will be a two round day, and Sunday will conclude the action with a round of its own. Each round is at a different course, and there are ten courses in total to accommodate all the players. At the end of it all, the awards and final presentations will take place, and I can only assume it will look like a rock concert. Overall, I may not see a disc golf event like this in my life, and that fact makes this weekend a bit bittersweet. I will remember this weekend for the rest of my life though, and I can't wait to see what happens!
